Proposition 65 Warning Explanation

In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address their growing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative became the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known by its original name of Proposition 65. Proposition 65 requires the State to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include over 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. By providing this information, Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about protecting themselves from exposure to these chemicals. Proposition 65 also prohibits California businesses from knowingly discharging significant amounts of listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) administers the Proposition 65 program. OEHHA, which is part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), also evaluates all currently available scientific information on substances considered for placement on the Proposition 65 list.

What this means to our customers

In accordance with California Proposition 65, Master Power Brakes applies labels to either the actual product or packages containing the products shipping into the state of California in an effort to comply with the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (also known as Proposition 65). The warning does not mean that our products will necessarily cause cancer, birth defects, or any reproductive harm. We believe that our products when used in a manner that they were designed and intended for are not harmful even if the products may contain chemicals listed by Proposition 65 as harmful. Some of these chemicals can be found in products such as vinyl, coatings, plastics, and many more. The full list contains more than 900 chemicals and can be found here: Proposition 65 Chemical List

Why is Master Power Brakes providing this warning

Proposition 65 imposes strict penalties for non-compliance. While California has established “safe harbor numbers” for the chemicals listed, the cost to individually test the products that Master Power Brakes sells and distributes is prohibitive. This is particularly the case when the chemical list is so expansive and subject to change on an annual basis. As a result of the penalty potential, Master Power Brakes (like many other companies doing business in California) has decided to provide these warnings out of an abundance of caution.
